The Australian Government wants its future citizens to be aware of “Australian society and values.” So, each eventual citizen has to undergo a test to show their understanding of these values.

According to the Department of Immigration:

“Australian society values respect for the freedom and dignity of the individual, freedom of religion, commitment to the rule of law, Parliamentary democracy, equality of men and women and a spirit of egalitarianism that embraces mutual respect, tolerance, fair play and compassion for those in need and pursuit of the public good.

Australian society values equality of opportunity for individuals, regardless of their race, religion, or ethnic background.”

How does that measure up to your understanding of Australian values.

For me it reads just fine, but I am left wondering if it provides an adequate framework for addressing the five big issues confronting Australia, namely

  • climate change
  • Indigenous recognition
  • refugees/asylum seekers
  • gay marriage, and
  • republic.
